The Teddy Boys were not only at the origins of Rockabilly, but also gave birth to another tribe that called attention to their customs and their style between the late 50’s and early 60’s: Mods, a term that comes from the “modernists”.
Mounted on their Lambrettas or Vespas with a ridiculous amount of mirrors, by using suits Italian trim fair, listening to The Who and taking amphetamines to help support its bustling night life, they were the “younger brothers” of the Teddy Boys who no longer wanted to listen to the rock ‘ n ‘ roll, traditional, and knew they had news on the music scene and the fashion that they were interested in. Meanwhile the Rockers, which also had exploded there a little, went in the opposite way with their bikes powerful, leather jackets and discs of Elvis. It’s no wonder that the meeting of these two tribes usually ended up in a fight!
The social origin of the Mods also differentiates itself from the rest of the tribes of the time, usually composed of young people from the lower class, because this time they were the boys of the middle class, with parents working in the trade of fabrics, which leads us to believe that this is the source of their taste for fashion. Shortly after emergence, their way of life was already followed by adolescents of the English, different economic classes, proving that the style had great appeal with any one.
The Mods spent most of their time in pubs, watching the shows and showing off their clothes and dance steps to the sound of Ska, Soul, Blue Beat and Jazz. As they returned to the house in time advanced, when there was no more public transport available, the stylish Vespas were your means of transportation practical and cheap, where added more than a dozen mirrors as a way to mock the british law that mandated the use of this item security.
In the mid-60s to the culture Mod has already begun to show worn out, the emergence of the hippies and of the psychedelic left little room for those who lived a life as troubled and active, even the bands who were icons of the movement changed its direction musical gradually.
There was also a faction more violent of the Mods that have withstood the test of time and the change of the cultural setting, called the Hard Mods, or the Gang Mods, they had less interest in fashion, but even so ended up mixing elements of his style such as shirts, Ben Sherman, pants by Levi’s and suits 3 buttons, with parts used by the working class as suspenders and boots Dr. Martens. But the main thing was the hair completely shaved or cut very short which earned them the nickname of… skinheads… and the rest is history!
Characteristic elements of style Mod:
- Suits Italian as well just;
- Shirts Ben Sherman and Fred Perry;
- Lambrettas and Vespas as a means of locomotion;
- Hair well cut at the Mods and totally scraped or pressing on the Hard Mods;
- Use of the symbol of the royal Air Force as the icon id;
- Combat Boots Dr. Martens.
