The Mount Hope Bridge is a suspension bridge in the United States, located in the state of Rhode Island. The bridge spans Mount Hope Bay between Portsmouth and Bristol.
Characteristics
The Mount Hope Bridge is 1,868 meters long and has a main span of 366 meters. The pylons are 87 meters high and with suspension cables the 9 meter wide bridge deck is carried 41 meters above the Mount Hope Bay. State Route 114 runs over the two-lane bridge from Portsmouth to Bristol. The bridge connects the island of Rhode Island with the mainland of the state of Rhode Island.
History
The bridge was built between December 1927 and October 1929 and opened to traffic on October 24, 1929. The bridge replaced a ferry service. Construction cost $5 million and the bridge was a toll road. The bridge opened a few days before the 1929 Wall Street crash and was a private toll bridge. In 1931, the bridge was bankrupted by a local brewery, after which the bridge was acquired by the state of Rhode Island in 1954. The toll was reduced from $0.60 to $0.30 one way. In 1998 the toll was abolished because the collection costs were higher than the toll revenue. The bridge was also renovated between 1998 and 2004.

In the early 1970s, it was planned to make the bridge part of Interstate 895, a southern bypass of Providence. A second span would then be built at the Mount Hope Bridge. This plan was scrapped in 1982.
Traffic intensities
Every day 17,700 vehicles drive over the two-lane bridge, which is used fairly intensively.
