In 1670, British colonists built a settlement near the mouth of the Ashley River after the English King Charles II. Charles Town. Ten years later, Charleston was relocated to the other side of the river and soon became rich in rice, fur, and indigo trade. The high taxes paid to Britain provoked general opposition, and so South Carolina became heavily involved in the war for independence. In 1780, the British fleet occupied Charleston and the territory of South Carolina became the scene of many battles.

The development of cotton plantations has also helped the interior, but dependence on slave labor has led to South Carolina’s withdrawal from the Union. See South Carolina abbreviation.

An attack on the federal Fort Sumter in the port of Charleston started a civil war. The period of reconstruction in the South created racial tensions, which were reflected in the racist constitution of 1895. Black civil rights were not restored until the 1960s.

South Carolina is one of the most backward states in the United States, and traditional cotton, agricultural, and tobacco processing still play a major role in its economy. The warm climate and old-world atmosphere of coastal cities is a great tourist attraction.
