Oregon has a beautiful landscape with high, densely forested mountains, a series of snow-capped volcanoes, plateaus and plateaus cut through deep valleys and canyons. The forests in the west and northeast are the main assets of Oregon, the east is filled with semi-desert areas. See Oregon abbreviation.

In the 16th century, both Great Britain and Spain claimed the territory, yet a large and diverse population of Indians lived untouched until 1792, when Robert Gray (1755–1806) penetrated the Oregon along the Columbia River. Fur hunters soon came from the east, and in 1811 John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) made it easier for white pioneers to set up the Astoria Mall. The following decades saw a growing influx of settlers coming along the Oregon Trail. Most of them settled in the Willamete Valley between the Cascade Mountains and the Coastal Zone. In 1842, Britain relinquished its claims to Oregon, which later became the 33rd state of the Union.

Oregon has traditionally been a state for farmers and foresters, making it the first state to introduce strict car exhaust controls. Here, too, the ashes of St. Helena volcano caused serious damage to the forests. The state’s economy has diversified in recent decades and is prospering relatively well. The importance of tourism is growing and Oregon is becoming a paradise for skiers and anglers.
