Ohio forms a bridge between the original states of the Union and the Midwest. It was the 17th state to join the Union. See Ohio abbreviation.

In prehistoric times, Ohio was the home of the Hopewell people. The excavations of their large burial mounds and defensive ramparts indicate that it was a nation with a highly developed culture and craftsmanship. In the 18th century, Britain fought France. The definitive establishment of the state of Ohio was accompanied by rapid settlement, mostly by Scots, Irish and German-speaking immigrants. Waterways and railways strongly connected the area with the East, and the agricultural state was rapidly industrialized after the Civil War. The largest cities have developed along Lake Erie (Cleveland) and the Ohio River (Cincinnati).

Today’s Ohio is a highly industrialized state whose traditional industries such as coal mining and metallurgy have been almost displaced by the manufacturing of vehicles, tires, electrical engineering and electronics. The city of Dayton was home to the aviation pioneers Orville (1871-1948) and Wilbur (1867-1912) of the Wright, and thus is to become an important aviation industry.
