The new colony was named Carolina in honor of the king, and in 1665 it was extended north to areas that previously belonged to Virginia. In 1712, North Carolina became an independent colony headed by a governor. In 1729, the British Royal Administration was restored and ended in 1781 at the Battle of Guilford Court House.

During the 1930s, most Cherokee locals were forcibly relocated west of the Mississippi. North Carolina withdrew from the Union in 1861 and suffered heavy losses in the Civil War. Although the 1868 constitution was more liberal than some others, blacks were denied civil rights until the 1960s. The electronics and chemical industries already dominate the economy over the traditional production of textiles, footwear and furniture.
