California has the largest population of any US state and its economy is comparable to the strongest countries in the world. California has the largest concentration of car vehicles, the longest highway network and severely affected air, especially in the Los Angeles area. At the same time, it was practically untouched in the 18th century. See California abbreviation.
In 1542, the Spanish sailor Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (died 1543) was the first European to arrive on the California coast. The first official Spanish expedition did not take place until 1769. In the same year, the Spanish Franciscan Junípero Serra (1713–1784) established a mission in Monterey on the wild coast of Central California.
In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and over the next 20 years, Mexican settlers took over missionary ranches and expelled or enslaved the original California population. However, this area also began to attract white settlers. After a brief war, Mexico ceded to the United States in 1848 . The following year, the discovery of gold east of Sacramento set off a massive invasion of prospectors and settlers.
California remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Waves of immigrants from the east brought farmers to the Central Valley and meant the development of industry accelerated in the first half of the 20th century by oil extraction. Hollywood, a city near Los Angeles, has become the capital of film and television around the world. The population of California, which doubled every two decades between 1860 and 1960, is ethnically very diverse. Hispanics make up more than 1/4 of the population and Asians 10%, blacks 7%. More than 90% of California’s population lives in cities.
Today, California is not only an important agricultural state with a large production of wine, cotton and citrus, but still has important oil reserves, advanced industries (aerospace, shipbuilding, electrical, petrochemical, cement and food), and high tourism revenues. Silicon Valley south of San Francisco Bay has become the world’s center of microelectronics. The San Andreas Fault crossing San Francisco and stretching north of Los Angeles is the cause of frequent earthquakes.
